How to Dress for Your Body Shape

One of our most frequently asked questions by clients is how to dress for your body shape. Everyone wants to look good in what they wear, and much of this revolves around choosing silhouettes, design details, and fabrics that work well on our unique bodies.

So, how do you know what styles will work for you? Consider your body type. The concept may seem simple enough, but often we look in the mirror and focus on minor details, which makes it difficult to understand our overall frame. Take a step back and consider your proportions altogether. It may help to dress in all black form-fitting clothes before looking in the mirror so that you see one continuous shape. Look to see if your widest point is your shoulders and bust, midsection, or hips and legs. Do you have a defined waistline? Are you on the shorter or taller end of the spectrum? These factors may be useful to consider as you get dressed.

If you can’t seem to figure out what shape you are, we recommend taking your measurements and entering them into this body type calculator. That’s how we start all of our styling appointments!

However, don’t get caught up in the numbers, this is not a matter of identifying flaws. This exercise will simply inform how you balance your features. Remember, we will be discussing general rules of thumb to bring balance to your silhouette. By no means do you have to follow these rules to look great!

Petite Dressing

Dressing for petite body shape

One body type that can be challenging to dress is a petite frame. Petites are generally considered to be women under 5’4”. Before Petites can even consider which styles flatter their frame, they often must worry about clothing simply fitting correctly. Most petite women will run into issues like inseams being too long on pants, sleeves extending past their wrists, and long shirt hems that make tops look more like dresses.

One great trick is to find brands that offer special petite sizing. Banana Republic is a particularly good brand for Petites to shop from because of the incredible breadth of their petite selection, including classic styles like this utility jacket. Items labeled as petite will offer better fitting garments straight off the rack, but that doesn’t guarantee that they’ll always be perfect. If the garment still needs adjusting or if you fall in love with an item that is only offered in traditional sizing, the best thing you can do is to take it to a trusted tailor. Everyone – regardless of body type – should have a go-to tailor. A great fit is everything when you want to dress for your body shape!

Now that we have garment fit out of the way, let’s talk about how to flatter this body type. Many petite women seek to look taller and lengthen their frame. There are a few tricks to achieving this. In general, you will want to avoid styles that “cut” your figure up, such as horizontal stripes, midi skirts and culottes, and stark contrasts between your top and bottom (e.g., a black top and white pants). Bulkier fabrics and oversized silhouettes can easily overwhelm petite figures.

Instead, look for vertical lines, bottoms with hems either above the knee or down to the ankle, and monochromatic outfits to lengthen your frame. Solid dresses and jumpsuits are great for Petites because they create an uninterrupted line down the body. V-neck necklines are a great choice to create the illusion of a longer neck and torso. Additionally, slimmer silhouettes with defined waistlines will prevent your figure from being overwhelmed in fabric. Shoes can also be key in creating a flattering outfit. Nude pumps and pointed-toe shoes are as good as it gets to lengthen your legs, but any shoe with a heel will also work beautifully.

Balancing your Top and Bottom Halfhow to flatter your bottom half

Many women are wider on either the top or bottom half. These body types are determined by both bone structure and weight distribution. If you’re wider on one half, there are tons of styling tricks to dress for your body shape and balance your proportions. The strategies for these two body types will be the opposite.

Women who are wider on the bottom are commonly referred to as triangle or pear shapes. Their hips are wider than their shoulders and weight distributes in their lower half. If this describes your body type, you can balance your proportions by slimming your lower body and adding volume to your upper body. Some of the best styles to emphasize your chest and shoulders are bateau necklines, sweetheart necklines, off the shoulder tops, cap sleeves, puff sleeves, and shoulder pads. These will draw attention upward and outward. You can also accomplish this with accessories, such as scarves, necklaces, and earrings, or with bright colors. On the bottom, your best choices will be dark colors, vertical lines, simple designs, and straight-leg silhouettes. Skinny leg styles tend to emphasize curves on the bottom half, so look for styles that pull away from the ankle somewhat for a slimming effect.

Those that are wider on top, commonly referred to as an inverted triangle body shape, have proportionally broad shoulders and narrow hips. Women in this category may wish to balance their shape by slimming the upper body and adding volume to the lower body. To do this, pay attention to the neckline. Choose asymmetrical shapes, wide straps, and narrow v- or u-necks to downplay the proportion of your shoulders. Vertical lines and body-skimming shapes are also great on top. Avoid heavy embellishments, bright colors, and loud patterns on top, as these will draw attention upward. Direct attention downward instead. Opt for patterns, lighter colors, and embellishments on your lower half. It also looks great to balance your body’s volume on top with voluminous clothing on the bottom. Look for A-line skirts, wide-leg pants, and flared silhouettes to balance out your look.

Flattering your Midsection

dressing to flatter your midsection

If you previously identified your midsection as your widest point, you may be wondering how to flatter this area as you dress for your body shape. In fact, this is a common concern for women regardless of shape, whether you’re looking to disguise extra weight, define a boxy waistline, or emphasize a narrow waist. There are plenty of tried-and-true tips to make your midsection look great no matter your goal.

Most women realize that tight clingy clothing is going to draw attention to extra weight around their middle. However, baggy clothing isn’t the answer either. Sure, oversized clothing won’t cling to the area, but it will make you look larger and drown your shape. Flattering the stomach area is a balance of nipping in the waist and making sure the garment skims rather than clings. You’ll want some structural details on top combined with a great fit to nail this!

Ruching and draping are among the best ways to create a great structure that pulls away from the body just enough. For example, draped dresses with an empire waist will allow the fabric to float over the midsection while still carving a narrow waistline for an ultra-flattering effect. Peplum blouses accomplish the same. Surplice tops and dresses allow for plenty of breathing room while the draping narrows your waistline for an hourglass effect. Other details to look for are a wrap, tie, and drawstring details at the waist.

Outerwear is another great tool to cinch in your waist. Cardigans and jackets do a few things for you: First, they create a vertical line down your body for a slimming effect. Second, when worn open, they visually cut off a few inches from either side of your midsection. Third, they are the ideal way to create a flattering shape for your body. A structured jacket with a contoured waistline will carve out a waistline for you no matter what top you have on underneath. Throw over a monochromatic outfit to enhance the effect!

Wrap up

Start with these guidelines to dress for your body shape and create balanced, beautiful overall looks. Of course, every body is different and can’t exactly be summed up by a simple shape. Women’s Winter Coats: A Guide

If you’re like me, winter snuck up on you this year and you’re scrambling to find stylish outerwear to get you through the winter. A quick search on your favorite sites will reveal hundreds of women’s winter coats to choose from. How do you decide what to buy? Which options are the warmest? Which will work well with your personal style? Skip the decision fatigue and let us guide your search.

Many women treat winter coats as an investment item. A warm, high quality coat could set you back a couple hundred dollars, which means choosing the right piece can be intimidating. We recommend a few styles that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

Each piece in your collection should have a purpose in terms of occasion, level of warmth, and silhouette. You may love puffer coats but having five puffers and no other styles will making getting dressed in the morning a hassle. Start here for the options that provide the best combination of fashion and function to suit your lifestyle.

Wool Coats

Women's Winter Coats

I firmly believe every woman should own a wool coat. First, you can find options that are lightweight enough to start wearing in fall when you’re not ready to bring out your heavy-duty coats. They are also easy to layer for chillier winter temperatures, which has so much styling potential!

Try layering a light down-filled jacket, a chunky sweater, or a hoodie underneath. Interesting layering is a great way to show off your unique style. Also, wool coats are among the most sleek and stylish options for women’s winter coats. This will be your go-to for throwing over dressy holiday looks when a sporty puffer jacket doesn’t cut it.

You may be wondering what to look for in the sea of wool coat options available. Be advised that the fabric content matters. A 100% wool coat will provide great warmth and will typically be somewhat pricey. If you’re looking for something even more luxe, 100% cashmere coats are stunning to both the eye and touch and will pack in additional warmth.

Alternatively, a wool-blend fabric makes the perfect choice for a budget-friendly coat. These are still insulating and are just as stylish as the more expensive versions.

After choosing the fabric type that suits your budget and preferences, start thinking about the design you want. There are seemingly endless possibilities here. Consider length, fit, fastenings, collar, and finishing details. Long coats will seal in more warmth than hip-length options.

Oversized varieties allow for more layering, while tailored silhouettes give a sharp, formal look. Double breasted and wrap coats provide more coverage and therefore warmth. Websites will typically describe the coat style in the product description to streamline your search.

These key terms frequently include: the peacoat (short-to-mid length and double-breasted), the wool trench (long and belted with a lapel collar), the duffle coat (short length, toggle fastenings, and more casual styling), and the overcoat (heavy fabric, long length, and single or double-breasted).

Finally, choose a color. Black, grey, navy, and camel are the most common and versatile options. Consider what color will complement the rest of your winter wardrobe – you’ll be wearing this coat over everything!

Puffer Coats

Women's Winter Coats

Another popular style for women’s winter coats is the puffer. This is the coat you pull out on the most frigid of winter days because of how much insulation it packs in. Puffer coats are stuffed with either down, feathers, or a synthetic alternative.

Down has been traditionally viewed as the gold standard for coat fillings due to it being so lightweight, warm, and easy to pack. However, down coats tend to be very pricey and come with concerns over animal cruelty. Feather-filled puffers have a lower price tag but tend to be slightly lower in overall quality.

For those seeking vegan alternatives, plenty of puffer coats are now stuffed with synthetic materials like polyester. These range a little more in quality of insulation but can be just as good as down. Do your research on how densely the coat is filled and what it is filled with.

Another concern that people have with puffer coats is that they won’t look flattering or stylish. We’ve all seen the “marshmallow” coats that keep you nice and toasty but only detract from your outfit. The good news is that puffer coats have made great strides in the last couple years, and are a very stylish, trendy piece this season!

For those concerned with finding figure flattering options, look for coats with decorative lengthwise seams or a belt at the waist to enhance your silhouette.

Looking for something to push your boundaries? Try a metallic, an interesting color to make your outfits pop, or a printed puffer coat. I’m particularly inspired by the leather and faux leather puffers that have been huge this year. They’re such a cool take on a piece that we’re used to thinking of as more functional than fashionable. A leather fabrication feels indulgent yet practical.

This is the philosophy fashion has been moving toward since the beginning of the pandemic, so it’s a great time to invest in a puffer you love.

Trench Coats

Women's Winter Coats

The trench is one of the most timeless articles of clothing for men and women alike. It does so much for your wardrobe. The trench adds refinement and professionalism to your work wardrobe, elevates your casual errand outfit, carries you seamlessly through season transitions, and of course, protects against the elements.

You’ll find exciting new ways to style this piece each season. Lately, I’m loving a trench coat layered over a blazer and tee, monochromatic looks, and loungewear sets. Invest in one that will last you for years to come.

Your wool and puffer coats will be your go-to’s for the coldest winter days. The trench coat is usually not designed to be your warmest piece of outerwear, but instead is perfect for layering and styling between seasons. I therefore suggest prioritizing mid-weight cotton styles.

In spring, wear your trench over a dress and booties; in fall, wear it with distressed jeans and a blouse; in winter, style it over leather pants and a chunky knit. You should also look for water-resistant options to get the most out of your trench. Whether April showers or winter snow, you’ll reach for this piece time after time.

The basic silhouette of the trench coat hasn’t changed much over the years. It is typically a khaki colored mid or long length coat, double breasted with wide lapels, and has a belt at the waist. This classic styling is a foolproof choice. Keep a look out for fresh takes on the classic, too, such as an oversized silhouette, leather or vinyl fabrications in a range of colors, and more minimalistic styling.

Wrap-Up

There are a ton of options out there for women’s winter coats. If you’re looking to revamp your outerwear selection, make sure a wool coat, a puffer, and a trench are at the top of your list. These will meet your needs for any occasion.

Of course, there are plenty of other great options out there for women’s winter coats (an honorable mention to the faux fur coat!) and everyone’s needs are slightly different. Consider your work environment, the climate where you live, whether you have kids, and your typical daily routine. If you are seeking more individualized help, schedule a shopping appointment and we will select the best styles for your needs.

What to Wear: Christmas Light Viewing Winter Outfits

With Halloween and Thanksgiving over, we can finally agree that it’s a respectable time to get into the holiday spirit with wintertime activities such as Christmas light viewing. What better way to get in the mood than with a few winter outfits for the occasion? I advocate for maintaining the traditions we can as we wait for a safe return to our normal holiday celebrations.

Just because we can wear the same pair of sweatpants for a week straight doesn’t necessarily mean we should—find little ways to celebrate yourself and celebrate the season, even if it’s just getting dressed in cute winter outfits to drive around and see the best lights in the city. Besides, as temperatures chill, our options are slim for warm, socially distant activities outside of the house. Make an evening of it with a roommate or significant other. Throw on a scarf, turn on some holiday music, and embrace the holiday spirit with a peppermint mocha in hand.

You won’t have many eyes scrutinizing your outfit while in the comfort of your car, but getting dressed for YOU is more fun anyway. Put on an outfit that makes you feel amazing. Out of practice and need some styling tips? Not to worry. We’ve put together our favorite outfit formulas to get you started on your festive look. And, check out our blog page for even more what-to-wear guides.

Outfit #1: Straight Leg Jeans + Chunky Sweater + Printed Scarf + Trench + Ankle Boots

Winter Outfits

Our first look will take you through your day seamlessly, from errand running to Zoom calls to Christmas light viewing, without necessitating an outfit change. This is a classic and elevated winter outfit. Start with a chunky knit, neutral-hued sweater. This will keep you cozy and lays the perfect foundation for coats and accessories later.

It’s always a good idea to start with a neutral basic like this to ensure that your outfit flows together. Next, add a pair of light wash jeans. There is a misconception that light washes are for summer and dark washes are for winter—don’t believe it! I love light wash denim to break up the sea of dark fabrics you see in colder months. Look for a clean, non-distressed style with a straight ankle to keep your legs warm and your outfit on-trend.

Straight leg jeans are arguably at their best when paired with block-heeled ankle boots. I look for a low-mid heel, about 2”, to keep the look comfortable throughout the day. Opt for a flat shoe if you are on your feet a lot. Depending on where your boots and jeans hit at the ankle, you may want to cuff them. This prevents your jeans from pooling awkwardly around your boots, thus giving you a more put-together and “lifted” look.

The next step is outerwear. Everyone should own a slim-cut belted coat such as a wool trench. Sure, your puffer coat packs in the most warmth, but a trench coat offers such a sleek finish to your winter styling. The wrap-effect gives you great coverage and the belt does double duty in defining your waist and holding your coat in place. Look for a neutral color palette here, too. You’ll want to get the most use possible out of your trench, and grey and camel hues will go with all your winter outfits.

One of the best things about cold weather is having an excuse to break out your winter accessories. Scarves deliver pops of color, texture, and pattern to spice up your looks without a huge investment. Here, choose a patterned scarf to top off your look. Windowpane, plaid, and leopard are some great options. This piece will keep your outfit from feeling boring despite it being made up of all simple foundation pieces.

Fun and versatile accessories like this are essential to keeping your outfits interesting without buying a million items—they’re highly recommended for those seeking a capsule wardrobe!

Outfit #2: Red Turtleneck Sweater + Leather Leggings + Fur-Lined Duck Boots + Knit Hat

Winter Outfits

For the next outfit, let’s make your look extra festive with a red sweater. Turtleneck and mock neck sweaters have been a huge trend in the last couple of years and now is a great time to invest in one. Practical and stylish! Go for a medium to heavy knit to stay warm and a longer length to give you more coverage.

This oversized look will pair perfectly with a pair of leggings. Choose leather or faux leather on the bottom to add a little texture and shine that contrasts beautifully against your wooly knit on top. You can find leather leggings in smooth leather, patent, croc pattern, or with edgy moSet featured imageto seaming. These will all work great! Here, I chose plain faux leather for a more classic look. These fashion-forward leggings will compliment your curves and keep you comfortable as you wander the city.

I like to pair leggings with a boot that comes up a little higher on the leg, such as a mid-calf length duck boot. Duck boots are a waterproof style of shoe with rubber on the bottom half and leather, suede, or other textiles around your ankle. This gives you the best of both worlds—dry feet and a great range of motion around the ankles. Duck boots are the perfect choice for snowy weather. The fur and shearling-lined varieties are wonderful. I recommend choosing these to keep your feet extra warm.

Finally, time to accessorize. This look is begging for extra cozy wintertime pieces. Since we already have a lot of volume around the neck with a turtleneck, skip the scarf and choose a knitted beanie instead. I like one with a cable knit or pompom detail for extra winter vibes. Knitted hats are one of the warmest headwear options, so it’s a good idea to have at least one in your wardrobe.

This look could use one more element to make it pop, so consider adding a simple sparkly earring. Shimmery jewelry feels so festive against a backdrop of Christmas lights! This earring is an ideal complement to all your winter outfits.

Outfit #3: Gray Cashmere Knit + Leather Puffer + Beret + Sneakers + Jeans

Winter Outfits

One of my favorite trends this year is the leather puffer jacket. It’s no secret that puffer jackets are one of the warmest outerwear options for winter outfits, but until recently, they’ve fallen into the category of merely a “necessary evil.” But, with a leather or faux leather fabrication, they become a cool fashion staple. I love luxe fabrics like these to create a festive holiday look.

Keep up the air of sophistication by layering your coat over a fine knit grey cashmere sweater. It’s wise to choose a lightweight knit to go under the puffer so your outfit doesn’t become too bulky or restrictive when you’re out and about looking at Christmas lights.

Add your favorite pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers on the bottom. I chose simpler pieces so the jacket and accessories will stand out. Try a pair of washed-out jeans in a relaxed fit and some bone colored sneakers for an understated vintage look. To make it feel a little sleeker, you can swap these pieces out for slimmer, darker wash denim and leather sneakers.

To finish the look, add one of the best accessories of the season—the beret—for a little Parisian flair. It’s more versatile than you might think. Throw it on with any of your more classic winter outfits. And, while it may be a trend piece, this hat style never really goes out of style. It has seen so many resurgences over the decades. To increase your comfort in styling it, invest in one in a neutral shade. A beige wool style makes this hat into a timeless basic. Missing something? Add a simple post earring and a swipe of lipstick and you’ll be ready to go Christmas light viewing!
