What to Wear: Christmas Light Viewing Winter Outfits

With Halloween and Thanksgiving over, we can finally agree that it’s a respectable time to get into the holiday spirit with wintertime activities such as Christmas light viewing. What better way to get in the mood than with a few winter outfits for the occasion? I advocate for maintaining the traditions we can as we wait for a safe return to our normal holiday celebrations.

Just because we can wear the same pair of sweatpants for a week straight doesn’t necessarily mean we should—find little ways to celebrate yourself and celebrate the season, even if it’s just getting dressed in cute winter outfits to drive around and see the best lights in the city. Besides, as temperatures chill, our options are slim for warm, socially distant activities outside of the house. Make an evening of it with a roommate or significant other. Throw on a scarf, turn on some holiday music, and embrace the holiday spirit with a peppermint mocha in hand.

You won’t have many eyes scrutinizing your outfit while in the comfort of your car, but getting dressed for YOU is more fun anyway. Put on an outfit that makes you feel amazing. Out of practice and need some styling tips? Not to worry. We’ve put together our favorite outfit formulas to get you started on your festive look. And, check out our blog page for even more what-to-wear guides.

Outfit #1: Straight Leg Jeans + Chunky Sweater + Printed Scarf + Trench + Ankle Boots

Winter Outfits

Our first look will take you through your day seamlessly, from errand running to Zoom calls to Christmas light viewing, without necessitating an outfit change. This is a classic and elevated winter outfit. Start with a chunky knit, neutral-hued sweater. This will keep you cozy and lays the perfect foundation for coats and accessories later.

It’s always a good idea to start with a neutral basic like this to ensure that your outfit flows together. Next, add a pair of light wash jeans. There is a misconception that light washes are for summer and dark washes are for winter—don’t believe it! I love light wash denim to break up the sea of dark fabrics you see in colder months. Look for a clean, non-distressed style with a straight ankle to keep your legs warm and your outfit on-trend.

Straight leg jeans are arguably at their best when paired with block-heeled ankle boots. I look for a low-mid heel, about 2”, to keep the look comfortable throughout the day. Opt for a flat shoe if you are on your feet a lot. Depending on where your boots and jeans hit at the ankle, you may want to cuff them. This prevents your jeans from pooling awkwardly around your boots, thus giving you a more put-together and “lifted” look.

The next step is outerwear. Everyone should own a slim-cut belted coat such as a wool trench. Sure, your puffer coat packs in the most warmth, but a trench coat offers such a sleek finish to your winter styling. The wrap-effect gives you great coverage and the belt does double duty in defining your waist and holding your coat in place. Look for a neutral color palette here, too. You’ll want to get the most use possible out of your trench, and grey and camel hues will go with all your winter outfits.

One of the best things about cold weather is having an excuse to break out your winter accessories. Scarves deliver pops of color, texture, and pattern to spice up your looks without a huge investment. Here, choose a patterned scarf to top off your look. Windowpane, plaid, and leopard are some great options. This piece will keep your outfit from feeling boring despite it being made up of all simple foundation pieces.

Fun and versatile accessories like this are essential to keeping your outfits interesting without buying a million items—they’re highly recommended for those seeking a capsule wardrobe!

Outfit #2: Red Turtleneck Sweater + Leather Leggings + Fur-Lined Duck Boots + Knit Hat

Winter Outfits

For the next outfit, let’s make your look extra festive with a red sweater. Turtleneck and mock neck sweaters have been a huge trend in the last couple of years and now is a great time to invest in one. Practical and stylish! Go for a medium to heavy knit to stay warm and a longer length to give you more coverage.

This oversized look will pair perfectly with a pair of leggings. Choose leather or faux leather on the bottom to add a little texture and shine that contrasts beautifully against your wooly knit on top. You can find leather leggings in smooth leather, patent, croc pattern, or with edgy moSet featured imageto seaming. These will all work great! Here, I chose plain faux leather for a more classic look. These fashion-forward leggings will compliment your curves and keep you comfortable as you wander the city.

I like to pair leggings with a boot that comes up a little higher on the leg, such as a mid-calf length duck boot. Duck boots are a waterproof style of shoe with rubber on the bottom half and leather, suede, or other textiles around your ankle. This gives you the best of both worlds—dry feet and a great range of motion around the ankles. Duck boots are the perfect choice for snowy weather. The fur and shearling-lined varieties are wonderful. I recommend choosing these to keep your feet extra warm.

Finally, time to accessorize. This look is begging for extra cozy wintertime pieces. Since we already have a lot of volume around the neck with a turtleneck, skip the scarf and choose a knitted beanie instead. I like one with a cable knit or pompom detail for extra winter vibes. Knitted hats are one of the warmest headwear options, so it’s a good idea to have at least one in your wardrobe.

This look could use one more element to make it pop, so consider adding a simple sparkly earring. Shimmery jewelry feels so festive against a backdrop of Christmas lights! This earring is an ideal complement to all your winter outfits.

Outfit #3: Gray Cashmere Knit + Leather Puffer + Beret + Sneakers + Jeans

Winter Outfits

One of my favorite trends this year is the leather puffer jacket. It’s no secret that puffer jackets are one of the warmest outerwear options for winter outfits, but until recently, they’ve fallen into the category of merely a “necessary evil.” But, with a leather or faux leather fabrication, they become a cool fashion staple. I love luxe fabrics like these to create a festive holiday look.

Keep up the air of sophistication by layering your coat over a fine knit grey cashmere sweater. It’s wise to choose a lightweight knit to go under the puffer so your outfit doesn’t become too bulky or restrictive when you’re out and about looking at Christmas lights.

Add your favorite pair of jeans and a pair of sneakers on the bottom. I chose simpler pieces so the jacket and accessories will stand out. Try a pair of washed-out jeans in a relaxed fit and some bone colored sneakers for an understated vintage look. To make it feel a little sleeker, you can swap these pieces out for slimmer, darker wash denim and leather sneakers.

To finish the look, add one of the best accessories of the season—the beret—for a little Parisian flair. It’s more versatile than you might think. Throw it on with any of your more classic winter outfits. And, while it may be a trend piece, this hat style never really goes out of style. It has seen so many resurgences over the decades. To increase your comfort in styling it, invest in one in a neutral shade. A beige wool style makes this hat into a timeless basic. Missing something? Add a simple post earring and a swipe of lipstick and you’ll be ready to go Christmas light viewing!

Wrap-Up

Our Cyber Weekend Picks

It seems there’s no escaping the online sales for the weekend. Advertisements for the biggest shopping event of the year are pouring in through email, tv, and every form of social media. While it’s great timing as we try to cross off some gifts for our loved ones (and ourselves!), the sales can be overwhelming. There’s no need to spend the weekend scouring websites for deals—let us do it for you. Our team has selected our top picks on sale now. Browse our recommendations for where to shop and what pieces to look for below.

Lotte’s (Assistant Stylist) Picks:

I’m typically not one to rush out to stores at 5 am to snag that big-ticket item. But I keep a running list on my phone all year of items I’d like to add to my closet and use the holiday weekend as a chance to cross a few off my list. Last year it was a gorgeous gingham printed coat and some black leather studded boots. Here’s what I’ve got my eye on this year.

Cyber Monday 2020

Quay BOGO Sunglasses: Raise your hand if you’re in the constantly losing sunglasses club. If you are anything like me, it hurts to realize you left your $300 dollar Ray-Bans in the hotel room. I find it stings a little less when I purchase more affordable sunglasses that don’t skimp on quality. Quay is my go-to resource and their BOGO Black Friday offer is a must-not-miss. I’ll be picking up their classic High Key Aviators which give me major Kris Jenner vibes, and these trendy round Jezabell Shades

Abercrombie and Fitch 40% off sitewide: One of my favorite items to snag during the cyber weekend is coats. They can be a high-ticket item and make an investment-worthy addition to your wardrobe. It’s no secret that puffers are totally on-trend right now and this vegan leather version feels just luxe enough to dress up any athleisure outfit.

Madewell up to 50% off Another basic to load up on during the holiday sales are jeans. Madewell is one of my favorite jean brands for fit and quality and the straight leg light wash slightly mom style of these vintage-inspired jeans are the perfect complement to chunky sweaters and oversized scarves.

Haley’s (Intern) Picks:

Like Lotte, I keep a wish list of items favorited on my computer year-round. I revisit these items this time of year for markdowns and may also browse the Black Friday section of my favorite websites for deals. This is a great place to find killer prices on items I wouldn’t consider at full price. However, make sure you are buying with a purpose—not just because you found it on sale! Focus on basic pieces to round out your wardrobe and consider treating yourself to one or two trend items that you’ve had your eye on. After sorting through my favorite websites, I bring you my top picks for Black Friday 2020.

Cyber Monday 202

AllSaints 30% off sitewide: I am a huge fan of AllSaints for their sleek tailoring and masculine-meets-feminine aesthetic. Their outerwear and boots are especially great buys. This year, AllSaints is offering 30% off sitewide, including their coveted leather jackets, coats, and suiting! They are timeless pieces that are made to last. Thirty percent off investment items like these go a long way. If you’re not in the market for a winter coat, another option to check out is their blazer selection. I’m loving their take on the slouchy, oversized blazer look. It’s the perfect balance between classic and fashion-forward to keep your wardrobe feeling fresh. The fabric is sustainably sourced so you can feel good about your purchase. Plus, the matching pants are still in stock and on sale to complete your outfit!

Shopbop 20% off orders over $200: Shopbop is the ideal place to knock out your holiday shopping because they offer a seemingly endless selection of women’s clothing and accessories, giftable items for men, women, and children, and plenty of home accents in a range of budgets. Once you reach the $200 threshold for the 20% off, you may be tempted to start adding on a few little discounted gifts for yourself. I will be adding this sunglasses chain to my cart and repurposing it as a mask holder. It may feel frivolous at full price, but on sale, it’s a worthwhile way to make mask-wearing a little less tiresome. Pop them onto your sunglasses once the weather warms!

Nordstrom Rack 40% off clearance: Nordstrom Rack carries many of the same incredible brands as Nordstrom at a fraction of the cost, and with an additional 40% off their clearance items for Black Friday 2020, pieces from high-end brands are nearly free. This is the perfect place to get in on some of the trends that you’re considering experimenting with without shelling out hundreds of dollars. I always recommend choosing quality items but going a little lower in price point for trendy pieces. As a denim enthusiast, I’ll be looking out for some of the year’s coolest trends in denim. These coated jeans from FRAME strike the right balance between quality, fashion-forward design, and price.

Wrap-Up:

The selection of deals may feel overwhelming as nearly every website is having an online sale. Start here for our top picks across a range of websites. Remember to stick to planned purchases, whether they’re gifts for the family, discounted investment pieces like coats, basics like denim, or a trend piece or two that you can finally justify buying after a markdown. Stay safe and shop online from home! If you are looking for an extra special gift for a loved one and some sale jewelry and candles aren’t cutting it, consider gifting them with a personal styling session. If you book now, styling services are 20% off for the holidays!

What to Wear: Cute Thanksgiving Outfits

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, which means it’s time to sort out which of your cute Thanksgiving outfits you’ll be wearing this year. After all, occasions to dress up are few and far between these days. The holiday likely looks different for us in 2020, too, as we adapt our plans to be mindful of the pandemic. We may be staying home and cooking for a smaller crowd or establishing entirely new traditions. Regardless of whether we will be spending time with family, friends, or maybe just a roommate or significant other, it’s important to keep the holiday spirit alive! It’s great to have an excuse to dress up, decorate, and cook special dishes.

Typically, we want our Thanksgiving outfits to be equal parts cute and comfortable so we can get seconds (or thirds…) of our favorite foods without our clothing pinching and squeezing. This year is no exception! So, how do you strike the balance between looking fashionable and cold-weather-ready while staying comfortable? It’s easier than you might think. Last month, we covered what to wear to go apple picking. This month, we’re covering the best outfits to wear to Thanksgiving dinner. Read on for our top picks and easy outfit formulas to keep you looking your best for the holiday.

Outfit #1: Patterned Cape + Long Sleeve Tee + Leggings

Cute Thanksgiving Outfits

For our first outfit pick, start with the comfiest base layer of leggings and a long-sleeve tee. There are tons of legging options out there, and they are not just athletic wear or loungewear anymore. Designers are coming out with dressier options, like faux suede and faux leather fabrications, pairs with interesting patterns and sequin embellishments, and pairs with a moto look or trouser styling. These dressy-but-comfortable options make leggings the perfect piece to start with for the first of our cute Thanksgiving outfits!

Next, top with a long sleeve tee. You may wish to keep this layer a little longer to cover up if your leggings feel too revealing. Look for tunic-length tees if this a concern of yours! If you are just concerned about covering up in the back, high-low tees will also do the trick. Keep the top slightly oversized to make sure you have breathing room after indulging in all the turkey and stuffing your heart desires.

Leggings look great with longer and more oversized pieces on top, but we don’t want to lose your figure in too much fabric. To prevent this, consider a lower neckline to show off a bit of skin. This is a great place to accent with a necklace! With temperatures lingering in the 40s and 50s lately, you will probably want to add a layer on top. Besides, layering is a great way to show off your style and add pops of color and texture.

Throw on a fun patterned cape to pull the outfit together. A cape traditionally takes the form of a coat without distinct armholes, but the lines are somewhat blurred between a cape, shawl, poncho, and similar garments. While spending time indoors, a less structured cashmere or wool variation of a cape makes a great choice. Look for plaid, windowpane, and houndstooth patterns—they are some of the most popular choices for winter outerwear. Finally, finish your look with a block-heeled bootie. We stuck to a creamy brown and ivory color palette for this look, which is always a winning choice for Thanksgiving.

Outfit #2: Sweater Dress + Tights + Suede Boots

Cute Thanksgiving Outfits

A sweater dress is another perfect place to start for putting together cute Thanksgiving outfits. The sweater dress is super cozy for the chilly weather, and there are stylish options that flatter all body types. You can choose from fitted varieties, wrap dresses, and more relaxed silhouettes. I love an off the shoulder relaxed fit for Thanksgiving. The looser shape keeps you from feeling constricted, and the neckline prevents the look from feeling too shapeless or sloppy.

If you prefer to add some definition to your waistline, a wide belt looks great here! For shorter dresses, pair with a knee-high or over-the-knee suede boot to cover a little bit of leg. A sweater dress with knee-high boots is such a simple, classic, and foolproof way to do a Thanksgiving look. Add a pair of tights underneath for extra warmth. I recommend a pair of semi-sheer black tights because they are going to be endlessly versatile in your wardrobe year-round. If you already have this basic pair and want something with more flair, look for subtle ribbed textures or lacy prints, a brown or burgundy color, or some shine in the fabric.

The great thing about this outfit is that you’re fully covered for warmth, nothing is too fitted but it still has a touch of sexiness, and no pants are required! Throw on some jewelry to make everything pop. I love off the shoulder necklines with a statement earring. You can also add some shine in the form of hair accessories, like an embellished headband, glitzy bobby pins, or a gold hair clip like the one shown here. Read our post about accessorizing like a stylist for more help selecting the right pieces to complete your look. Add a long unstructured jacket as your final layer and you are good to go! This is a great place to add a pop of color.

Outfit #3: Leather Joggers + Mules or Slides + Sweater

Cute Thanksgiving Outfits

Looking for a little more coverage on your bottom half? Start with a leather jogger. These will be your best friend when putting together cute Thanksgiving outfits and into the holidays that follow. The sportiness of the jogger silhouette feels so cool juxtaposed with the sophistication of leather or faux leather material. These are cut for a more relaxed fit and often have an elastic waistband, so they are incredibly comfortable!

Choose lambskin for the buttery feeling of real leather or opt for faux to make it vegan. Faux leather pants are typically a fraction of the cost and can feel just as luxe. Again, this pant brings some sporty and some sophisticated elements, so you can go either direction with footwear when styling these. For Thanksgiving, however, let’s take them in a more refined direction with a mule or slide. These are similar types of shoes in that they have an open back and are either flat or have a low heel. The difference is that mules are closed-toe shoes and slides are open-toe. This makes the mule a slightly warmer option, though the difference won’t be drastic. If opting for a slide, look for a low heel to keep it from feeling too casual. Next, add a sweater on top for warmth. Try tucking the sweater in or choosing something cropped to show off any waistband detailing on the jogger!

Your sweater is a great place for an interesting neckline or sleeve detail, such as the balloon sleeve trend that we are seeing everywhere this season. A finer knit as I chose here will make the outfit feel more elegant. Pair with a simple clutch. The unstructured shape of this leather bag maintains the relaxed but refined aesthetic of the full look. Add a couple of pieces of jewelry or a bun wrap as the finishing touch!

Wrap-Up

Thanksgiving is sure to be a bit unusual this year given all that is going on in the world, but why not seize the opportunity to put on clothes that make you feel great and celebrate with loved ones in whatever way you are able to. These cute Thanksgiving outfits will keep you comfy and stylish for the holiday to suit whatever plans you have in store.
